This week, thanks to the miracle of the winter citrus harvest, we’re tackling questions that have plagued mankind for centuries: why old people get wrinkles, how to operate a kitchen torch, and why, WHY, does grapefruit always squirt in your eye? Also included: the most ridiculous way to eat a grapefruit, a.k.a. The Mamster Method. www.spilledmilkpodcast.com

I may be revealing too much here, but my husband and I sit in bed on weekend mornings and listen to Spilled Milk, and this morning he fell out of bed when Matthew mentioned taking the safety off of Old Betsy. He also had numerous comments about grapefruit eating, such as putting salt on grapefruit, which really makes me question our marriage. But we love your show!
I grew up eating salt on grapefruit, it was so delicious. Now, not so much. Great show guys!
This may seem excessive, but I’ve always used both a grapefruit knife AND a grapefruit spoon. First going around each little segment with my knife, then, after eating the cut pieces I use the spoon to scrape up any of the fruit that the knife may have missed.( mine’s serrated on the end, not the side) This way I never waste a single delicious morsel. This episode made me drive all the way to Costco and grab a huge bag of Ruby Reds!
mmmh. when i was little, my mother would halve it and prepare it with a grapefruit knife, and sprinkle brown sugar on top.
i sometimes also eat it by cutting it into 6 sections and then sucking on it like matthew and his dad. but i’m able to eat most of the pulp this way, too.
mostly though, i just eat it as if it were an orange, except i also peel off the skin of each segment. this is the best way to eat a grapefruit. beautiful and sweet. seriously. try it.
yum. now i want a grapefruit for dinner.
My first experience with grapefruit was when I was 17. I was climbing a giant mountain temple in Japan and for break my host mom handed out juice boxes. I was expecting it to be orange juice, so I was unpleasantly surprised with the grapefruit juice I found myself drinking. However I have seen the error of my ways and now I eat them like an orange, segmented and straight up!
Firstly, thanks for this stupendous show. Loving Spilled Milk so far.
Secondly, try using larger grain sugar for the brulee process, and before the melted sugar has time to solidify add a sprinkle of sea salt or kosher salt. It’s delicious. If you get the salt proportion right it will help the grapefruit be amazing! Hooray for biochemistry.
