Episode 72: Day of Perfect Meals

If you could have one day of unlimited travel, cash, and stomach capacity, plus the power to raise dead breakfast cooks, what would you eat? (Hmm, that makes it sound like we advocate eating zombies.) Molly and Matthew select their ultimate breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner, and dessert, and it quickly turns spooky. (Plus, you’ll never guess who goes to France! Okay, you will.) www.spilledmilkpodcast.com

    Dear Molly and Matthew,

I was listening to your new podcast this evening while walking our Corgi. As I was thinking of my own perfect meals (before you started on yours), Kao Mun Gai was definitely my lunch of choice (I am Thai). To my happy surprise, you both picked a Thai meal for your perfect lunches (who wouldn’t), and Molly had the same dish as me, even! Wow. If I could, I would take you both to Thailand and eat our way through the country! Thanks for your awesome podcast. I listen to each one, and look forward to many more! Cheers! ~ Kit

I love your podcast soooo much! Usually end up almost peeing my pants when I listen to it!

Here is my dream day of food-

Breakfast- Turkish breakfast- tomatoes, cucumbers, feta, cheese, olives, fried peppers, honey, jam, butter, crusty bread, fresh orange juice, Turkish tea….

Lunch- sandwich- whole wheat sliced bread, cheddar cheese, turkey breast (not lunch meat), tomatoe, lettuce, sliced pickles, mayonnaise, mustard. Fries on the side with ketchup. Dan pelligreno to drink….

Snack- crackers and cheese, triscuits and Melba toasts, variety of cheeses including camembert and cheddar with and onion confit

Dinner- lasagna (that I make) caesar salad, garlic bread

Dessert- chocolate brownie, with vanilla ice cream and salted caramel sauce….

    Yummy yummy!!

    I totally want this today!

We listened to this while we made dinner last night and talked about how lucky you are to live in the city where you can eat some of your perfect meals! I couldn’t resist writing about my own day of perfect meals: http://dressingfordinner.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/a-day-of-perfect-meals.html

Thanks for the blog post, Gemma! I linked to it on Twitter. Lori, I never knew what Turkish breakfast was until now, and I appreciate it. What is Turkish tea? Is it like Moroccan mint tea or something more akin to Turkish coffee?

Also, I’m going to assume Dan Pellegrino is a handsome Italian with a sparkling personality. Sorry.

The links on this post are exceptionally funny. Nigella Lawson deserves an episode devoted entirely to her physique.

I started mentally compiling my own “day of perfect food”, but then realized everything was from restaurants in San Francisco. I felt a bit cliche so I just stopped.

Molly, I LOVE that dessert too. Though my very favorite dessert at the restaurant is the Meyer lemon budino, served with the best shortbread ever.

Lori, your day of meals would be perfect for me. I have never had a Turkish breakfast, but now I really want to.

Erin, you should post your day! I enjoy hearing about them all. And I have never eaten at any restaurants in San Francisco, I think (strange, but true; I once had an ice cream sundae at the Ghirardelli cafe), so you can inspire me to visit.

    Nobody voted!
We have a split vote–my husband picked Matthew’s and I picked Molly’s. Dinner was the deciding factor.
    Wonderful idea for an episode.

Are we voting? I pick Matthew, although it was close. The pizza was the deciding factor.

Oh, but see, the winner of Day of Perfect Meals isn’t the one whose day is most appealing to other players; it’s the person who’s most self-satisfied at the end of the game.

I’m going to have to vote for Molly but only because I want something with breakfast besides water. A latté and something fresh-squeezed.

Also, I’m really bummed that my sister-in-law no longer lives in Seattle because I’m dying to try Delancy. And now Essex too! I’m trying to figure out how to plan a vacation around them without my wife thinking I’m nuts.

I am a few days late, but I pick Molly’s perfect day…just because I decided to branch out and have rhubarb this summer and I thought it was nasty. Sorry Matthew, your pizza almost put you over the top… almost.

This isn’t really related to this episode, but I would love to hear a show about how the two of you met. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard the story. I might have read it on Orangette years ago, but if I have, it’s been forgotten.

Shaun: You mean me and Molly, or Molly and Brandon? The story of how Molly and I met is not interesting–we’re just both longtime Seattle food writers. The story of how Molly met her husband Brandon is very cute; it was once a 2-minute Food Network segment, but I don’t think that’s online anymore.

I’ve not come up with a complete list but for breakfast my mind immediately went to Kalamazoo, MI to a now gone NY style deli that had a sun dried tomato cream cheese topped bagel with thick cut bacon. I’ve tried to recreate but it is just no the same.
